Pugnax

Pugnax means something like “fighting spirit”. Ruffs are a fascinating wader that, thanks to a so-called supergene, come in three morphs: dominant, satellite, and faeder. This is especially noticeable in the males—and yes, the dominant males are real fighters. Furthermore, they are birds that do full justice to the baroque... or should we call it kitsch?
